In a series that hasn't been kind to the Mets, New York was finally able to get a much needed win today. Led by the dominance of Jacob deGrom, the Mets were able to avoid a four game sweep. deGrom was strong at the plate as he connected on his first Major League home run in the third inning. But this wasn't just about his hitting, he pitched a phenomenal game. Going eight strong innings of work and allowing just three hits on one unearned run, deGrom put the Mets in position to win this game. This was one of his best starts of this season simply because of the opponent and their place in the standings.
The offense for New York was also strong as they collected 11 hits today. The line kept moving and that is something the Mets haven't done to often. They're mainly a power hitting lineup, but today they collected hits in bunches to score their runs. Michael Conforto did a great job in the leadoff spot collecting two hits for two runs batted in. He has struggled a bit since having some minor injury issues, but it was good seeing him have some nice at-bats today.
This game was very big for New York. They have fallen well behind in the division standings and a loss would have put them further down in those standings. New York now will head to the west coast to start a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. With this win New York should have some positive energy heading into a very important road trip.
